John was born in 1793 in County Derry, Ireland.  John's father was J. Buchanan.  He had a brother and a sister, named James and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 71 on April 7th, 1864 in Pokiok Settlement, York Co., CA.
